Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a tungsten-carbide through-hole bit last?
Carbide through-hole bits typically last 5-20x longer than HSS in MDF, plywood and chipboard. In solid hardwood expect 2-5x longer life; in softwood the gain is smaller.
Can it be re-sharpened?
Yes, by a specialist tool sharpener with diamond wheels. After 2-3 re-sharpenings we recommend replacing the bit to keep hole quality consistent.
What collet or chuck size do I need?
Most through-hole bits use 10 mm or 13 mm shanks. Match to your machine collet – common CNC and through-feed drills accept 10 mm directly.
What spindle speed should I run?
3,000-6,000 RPM for diameters 5-12 mm in wood-based panels. For diameters above 15 mm, drop RPM to 2,000-3,000 and increase feed.
Is this bit suitable for chipboard with melamine face?
Yes. The carbide edge and polished flute give clean entry/exit on melamine-faced board with minimal chipping. Use a back-up board to prevent blow-out.
